Welcome to Perranporth Flying Club, Cornwall's leading GA Airfield. We are based at Cornwall's only tarmac-surfaced General Aviation airfield. The airfield has two licensed tarmac runways and a third likely to be licensed soon, as well as two grass strips. The club has over 100 members, some of whom are training for their PPLs, some who fly their own aircraft and others who enjoy helping out and being involved in the active and friendly atmosphere.

Our training school has an enviable record of guiding students successfully through both the European and the National PPL courses, and also the IMC and Night Rating courses.
Visitors are always made welcome and Perranporth is an ideal base for visiting the beautiful county of Cornwall - indeed the cliff-top setting of the airfield with a view of Perranporth's stunning surfing beach is a treat in its own right! The airfield lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and rare birds of prey, butterflies and wild flowers can be seen from the cliff-top walks nearby.
Our cafe offers a range of tasty food and beverages. Whether you want a sandwich, lunch or home made cakes they are all freshly prepared. You'll find it below the control tower so you are never far from the action.
A War Memorial to pilots killed during the Second World War is situated next to the control tower and every year we host a well-attended memorial service. Aeroplanes first used this land in 1924 and later the aerodrome played an important role as a base for squadrons of Spitfires, Avengers and Swordfish between 1941 and 1945.Perranporth is a wonderful place to learn to fly. Students benefit from the availability of two tarmac runways so whenever the weather is suitable Perranporth students go flying!
There is no controlled airspace over Cornwall so VFR flights can range freely. More advanced students benefit from nearby Newquay airport where instrument approaches can be practised.
Both Newquay and RNAS Culdrose provide a radar service so students can experience the full range of R/T procedures.
We have 3 experienced instructors. We can also conduct flight tests and ground examinations on site as two of our instructors are examiners.
Qualifying as a pilot became less expensive in 2002 with the introduction of the National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL). This licence enables British residents to fly a single engine aircraft with a minimum of 32 hours instruction. The alternative to this is the European EASA PPL which takes a minimum of 45 hours or the EASA LAPL.
Whichever licence you choose you can change your mind during the course, either upgrading or downgrading as you wish. Having obtained an NPPL, additional training can be undertaken to upgrade to an EASA PPL, and if after a few years you don't anticipate using the privileges of your EASA PPL, you can downgrade to an NPPL.
At Perranporth Flying Club we train students for both licences, as well as providing training to upgrade from NPPL to EASA PPL, and for additional ratings such as the Instrument Meteorological Conditions rating (IMC) or IR(R). We also specialise in training for the Night rating. We use our own fully-equipped PA28 but if you wish to learn in your own suitable aircraft, we are delighted to do that, too. Hangarage is available if you want to base your aircraft at Perranporth.
